Internment....

In 1941 - Following the Pearl Harbour attacks - something extraordinary (in a bad sense) happened in Vancouver as well as other cities. The call was made for the internment of all Japanese people in Vancouver. In early March of that year, all ethnic Japanese in Vancouver were evacuated out of their homes and businesses and were relocated to the animal stalls at the Pacific National Exhibition for a few months. After that the Japanese were then relocated to interior British Columbia towns where they were isolated from other communities.

Scary to think that this happened in Vancouver - I suppose it was due to the war and also the paranoia surrounding the war but it is still hard to believe it happened in my home town. This historical event further showcases how difficult it was for ANA in North America. And like me, I think many people have forgotten or neglect the fact that all these things happened here..... right in our own city! Awareness is key to understanding.
