Two very important documentaries that were introduced to me in class that propelled me to write this blog as final project - The Slanted Screen and Slaying the Dragon.
Here are just some excerpts from the documentary which are of interest:
"Mainstream America for the most part is uncomfortable with seeing an Asian man portrayed in a powerful sexual light"
"Asians would play the enemy"
"Need to acknowledge that Asian men have sexuality"
"I realised all the hero figures I was looking up to were Caucasians..."
"Don't often see roles for Asian men"
"For any group to be marginalized in terms of their powers, one strategy to enact is to desexualize them and indeed that is the case for most Asian American males"
"People need to write non racial specific"
You can actually watch the whole Slanted Screen documentary on youtube ( you just have to search for it ) - I did not post this up, but someone else did.... so lucky for us! Below is a preview of the documentary.
